What is a Biorepository?

Human Tissue Sample Freezer

A biorepository is a laboratory facility devoted to the processing and storing of human tissue samples as well as other animal samples for use by third-party research institutions. The purpose of a biorepository is to maintain the biological samples and their related information for research purposes. The primary function of a biorepository is to assure the consistent quality of the specimens and to maintain the distribution and accessibility of the samples in its inventory. (1)

The 4 Primary Functions of a Biorepository

Collection

The collection of the specimen samples is arguably one of the most important roles of any bio-banking operation. Through the use of sophisticated LIMS systems (a lab inventory program), the laboratory personnel can authenticate and characterize any collected sample for future use. The entire process is a delicate balance of maintaining the integrity of the collected sample, quantifying the samples from the place of origin, and then analyzing the need for specific processing and temperature controls.

The Geneticist biorepository is cGMP compliant and we maintain the highest level of regulatory standards and protocols. Our biorepository management team enforces strict controls and monitoring. We engage our SOP’s with unparalleled scientific professionalism. The overall aim is to exceed expectations, comply and respect the principles set forth by GMP certified labs. (4)

storage and inventory

Distribution is the process of retrieving samples from the biorepository inventory system once it has been purchased. The logistics and handling of the bio-samples are orchestrated in such a way to facilitate the quality and integrity of the sample. I.e. temperature and climate-controlled transportation.
